Everytime i look for an independant editor to join me for on a project, i know it will need to be done in Premiere. I perate my own company on the side that does weddings, spots, commercials, music events.

Like i said, nobody around me works with avid, i'm working for a tv network with 22 editors, im the only guy with Avid.

5 to 10% of all of what is EDITED? What about every internet shows, every weddings, every events, every receptions. movies, documentaries, tv shows represent like what. Of all the editors i know, im the only one working with Avid, Even back in 2001-2002 at school, of all my fellow students that learned Avid, Im the only one still using it. I was actualy gonna write another big wall of text but i think i stated my opinion already.

Overall, on similar projects, Avid ends up being faster. Avid takes time at the beginning to prep, but it's much smoother sailing from there to finish. While you can get going right away in Premiere, on longer projects it bogs down at the end on a color-corrected and modestly effected timeline. To add my observations with both to the mix here. Yes im in a sinking ship, but i wont leave it till its gone for good because im used to its flaws so they're arent that bad for me. Yes the grass is greener on the other side.

I did go to the dark side a few times when i didn have time to make low res out of 4k H264 files while premiere edited them right away for the night's news, it felt bad using a software i didn like, but then i got to do the job in time while i would have not in Avid. i tried FCP and PREMIERE, i felt they were not for me, but time passed, hype went down, im facing times where the footage that is handed to me wont play smoothly in MC, my collegues edits right away while i background render and set tape names. ive been working with MC since 2005, im loving it. They can also integrate their timelines with any of the other bundled software in the creative suite for VFX / Coloring / Audio mastering, a suite that cost less than Avid itself does per month.

Yes Avid has its perks, like you said media management, i honestly think its strengh reside in its offline / online workflow with the background renderer, this is marvelous, but even that when i try to explain how it works and its benefits, premiere pro users go ''why would you transcode to low res, those files play fine in premiere, youre just wasting time here'' If youre at this a point of your career where you need to access 10 years of footage, you're not a student or new editor on the market. I also teach MC to young editors, they all complaint about how everything takes longer on Avid (specialy if they dont have 5000$ machines to work with) Lets be honest here, unless you work in a news network, accessing 10 years of raw footage on the network is not relevent to the situation. I submit that only those who use their assets productively will survive this game. you can access 10 years of footage on one machine or the network.

I'm being very negative here i know, but sadly for me, you and other avid users, Avid will eventually fall.Īvid has media management. Altho im an avid editor and prefers the avid way, there will just be no editor used to it anymore on the market.Īt this point, i dont even think avid can turn the table back to its favor anymore, the damage is done and NOTHING is planned to fix the issue as we speak. If i had to buy stations, i would not be buying Avid products. And sadly for me, NOBODY edits on avid anymore.

I'm operating my own buisiness here and lemme tell you that whenever i hire someone to do a job, i dont care what system they edit with, as long as they can use their full creative potential. I believe that at some point, companies will stop buying avid products as the avid user pool will be too low to support it as competitor products are seeing increasing usage thus new talents may be more comfortable working with adobe products. Its my opinion that this is what will bring Avid to its end. they can edit prosumer shots (DSLR) right away fluidly while avid struggles and requires a trancoding. Its probly the ONLY reason new editors are going with premiere or fcp. When speaking about the video engine Avid uses, the grass is greener on the other side.
